Heritage
Who we are and what we are do not happen by chance. As you may have seen on the TV programme 'Who do you think we are', we are often shaped by our heritage and ancestry.
The Yorkshire Dales has a documented history over a thousand years. Indeed Diane's family - the Metcalfe line - is a Wensleydale name which can be traced back to the 1200's. Today the Metcalfe name is still seen across the Dales, especially in Wensleydale. You can read more about it in the book 'Metcalfe-History of the Clan' which is in each of our cottages as it documents very clearly the development of the history of the Dales over hundreds of years through one large, and in medieval times very important family. The family seat is still very visible in Wensleydale just outside of Askrigg - Nappa Hall - a Grade I listed building that is undergoing a very long and expensive restoration.
If you have an interest in the history of the Yorkshire Dales or even just a certain element eg lead mining or cheese for example, there is something of interest for you. Most of all ENJOY!
